Optimizing for Distribution

How your content is uploaded and organized in VideoNest determines how it appears across your distribution platforms. Titles, descriptions, thumbnails, and all supporting metadata should be as detailed as possible so your content is as discoverable as possible on the platforms you distribute to.

Quick checklist

Before connecting your first distribution partner, make sure your library covers the basics:

  • Every video has a title and description
  • Every video has a thumbnail at 1280×720 or higher
  • Your library has at least 100 videos, or you have a plan to get there
  • You are publishing new content on a regular schedule
  • Episodic content has season and episode numbers set
  • Videos intended for CTV have a content rating

The sections below explain each of these in more detail.

Library size and publishing schedule

A library of 100 or more videos provides distribution partners enough content to work with. CTV platforms need enough videos to not only fill a channel rotation but help build an audience around your content. Podcast directories surface shows that update consistently. News portals favor publishers with a steady stream of new content.

Publishing on a regular schedule matters. Platforms favor channels that update consistently over those that upload in large batches and then go quiet. Weekly or twice-weekly publishing is a reasonable target for most publishers.

Long-form and short-form content can coexist in the same library. Long-form works well for CTV and podcast distribution. Short clips work well for news portals and social. You can send different content to different partners using duration filters, without maintaining separate libraries.

Titles and descriptions

Your video title and description are sent directly to every distribution partner and appear exactly as written on CTV home screens, news feed cards, podcast apps, and search results.

Titles should be specific and clear about what the video covers. Descriptions should add context. A sentence or two is enough. Both fields are indexed by platforms for search and discovery, so more detail generally helps.

Set titles and descriptions in Media → Library → [Video] → Metadata. To update many videos at once, use Media → Library → Select → Edit.

Thumbnails

Strong thumbnails are one of the most direct ways to improve performance across every platform. Thumbnails appear as tiles on CTV home screens, news feed cards, and search results, and need to be legible and visually distinct at small sizes.

  • Use 1280×720 pixels or higher
  • Landscape (16:9) format works across the widest range of platforms
  • Some CTV platforms specifically require a horizontal image
  • Avoid text overlaid on thumbnails — it renders poorly at tile sizes and some platforms strip it automatically

Transcripts

VideoNest automatically generates a transcript for every video you upload. No setup is required. Transcripts are included in your feeds where platforms support them and appear as closed captions on your VideoNest-hosted player.

Transcripts help with discovery. Platforms that index spoken content can surface your videos to viewers searching for topics covered in the video, even when those topics do not appear in the title or description.

Tags and auto-tagging

Tags control which videos appear in which feeds. If you distribute different content to different partners, tags are how you define those groups. You can tag videos by topic, format, or any grouping that fits your workflow.

If you prefer not to tag manually, VideoNest can tag your videos automatically. Enable auto-tagging when creating a new Automated feed at Media → Feeds → Create Feed → Automated → Auto-tagging. VideoNest analyzes the content and applies tags, which the feed's filter rules then use to include or exclude videos.

CTV: episodes, seasons, and content ratings

CTV platforms (Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Samsung TV+, Tubi, Pluto TV) support structured content metadata that other distribution types do not use. For channels distributing episodic content, this metadata is important.

Episodes and seasons

When episode and season numbers are set, CTV platforms display your content as an ordered series. Viewers can follow episodes in sequence. Without this data, episodes appear as a flat list with no implied order.

Set series name, season number, and episode number in Media → Library → [Video] → Metadata → Series & Episode Info.

Content ratings

Content ratings (TV-G, TV-PG, TV-14, TV-MA) tell CTV platforms what audience a video is appropriate for. Platforms use ratings for parental controls and audience targeting. Videos without a rating may be excluded from certain channel slots or placements.

Set content rating in Media → Library → [Video] → Metadata → Content Rating. For large libraries, use the batch editor or the API to update multiple videos at once.
